Creator's Cafe Episode 23: Carolina Alvarez

Happy Friday Reader,
It's new to me. Whether it's something familiar with new people (a meetup, a play reading, day trips, Disney!) or a new twist in a familiar place (algorithms but on TikTok, filming but with teleprompters! takeout but make it DTown Pizzeria!) it's always exciting, but I'm still surprised at how much energy it takes to do the new thing. And sometimes I fall in to focusing on what might not work instead of getting started and making it work.
I admire that Carolina (who is one of those fantastic new people) is so confident at diving into the new thing. She's quickly made the journey from "actor" to "actor/writer/producer/director" and is wrapping up her first on-budget, on-time feature! She trusts herself to learn quickly enough within the project.
May we all be so bold to just jump into the new thing already this spring.
-with love and diving board moxie, Jessica

Happy Friday Reader, What's lighting you up this holiday season? I'm delighted to welcome a new nephew, baby Levi, to my family. And I'll get to see friends and family in the next few weeks. In this episode, my guest Ashley talks about how many ideas can be a good idea, but the ones with staying power are the ones that keep you excited and engaged for the long haul. It's the difference between doing something as a "should" out of duty (or even a short term fun idea that doesn't have staying...

Happy Friday Reader, What if something wonderful just came out of nowhere? Have you forgotten that is also an option? I am definitely guilty of the big swing. Many days I'm really deeply optimistic, audacious, and bold. But then I can also swing to the opposite, and get pretty down on myself about the state of things. When that happens I almost forget that crazy and wonderful things can happen out of the blue. Every once in a while, life drops a big opportunity in your life. And if you're...

Happy Friday Reader, Welcome to the fall and cooler weather. When the seasons change, I like to check in and see what I want to change in my life. Metaphorically, what leaves am I ready to drop? Which new experiences do I want to try? I hugely value the people in my life who make me feel energized to lean into new experiences. This week's guest, Gabrielle, not only helped me learn to be an excellent AD, but she mentors and encourages all those around her to try the new thing. She's great at...
