Creator's Cafe Episode 38: Marshall Knight - Getting the Ideas Out

Happy Friday Reader,
Growing up, my friends all had posters of movie stars, TV stars, and pop stars covering their walls. I had one poster of the night sky's constellations and one of a blue whale out in the deep ocean.

I grew up on a dairy farm in PA, so while I might have to wake up early to put on overalls and scoop manure (suuuper fun as a teenage girl), movies and TV brought people and places from all over the world to my living room. Though I obviously love the work people create in Hollywood, what I really loved more than any one star was always the feeling of a bigger, wider sky full of constellations of possibilities.

My guest Marshall Knight gives me that same sense of space and possibility that those posters did. Yes, we talk all about his incredible career working on some of the most fun and dramatic TV shows out there. But it's his unabashed curiosity and enthusiasm for seeing the world through story that gives me the same rush of possibility.

So enjoy our conversation, and let me know - who are the people that feel like a breath of fresh air to you?

-with love and deep space, Jessica

Happy Friday Reader, What's lighting you up this holiday season? I'm delighted to welcome a new nephew, baby Levi, to my family. And I'll get to see friends and family in the next few weeks. In this episode, my guest Ashley talks about how many ideas can be a good idea, but the ones with staying power are the ones that keep you excited and engaged for the long haul. It's the difference between doing something as a "should" out of duty (or even a short term fun idea that doesn't have staying...

Happy Friday Reader, What if something wonderful just came out of nowhere? Have you forgotten that is also an option? I am definitely guilty of the big swing. Many days I'm really deeply optimistic, audacious, and bold. But then I can also swing to the opposite, and get pretty down on myself about the state of things. When that happens I almost forget that crazy and wonderful things can happen out of the blue. Every once in a while, life drops a big opportunity in your life. And if you're...

Happy Friday Reader, Welcome to the fall and cooler weather. When the seasons change, I like to check in and see what I want to change in my life. Metaphorically, what leaves am I ready to drop? Which new experiences do I want to try? I hugely value the people in my life who make me feel energized to lean into new experiences. This week's guest, Gabrielle, not only helped me learn to be an excellent AD, but she mentors and encourages all those around her to try the new thing. She's great at...
